“Climate is what we expect, weather is what we get.”  Mark Twain

                                                                     RIP.

The weather app, Dark Sky, was popular because it gave you the weather exactly where you were and told you how long it would last and what would happen next.  If you were out for a walk and it began to rain for example, you would look at your Dark Sky app. It would tell you that it would rain for 10 more minutes and then be cloudy. You could plan your daily activities within your immediate vicinity with impressive reliable accuracy. It was a simple app, but it did offer a radar map. Its information was valuable, and the app had many devoted followers. In fact, the mourning and grieving that went on for the month of January after it ceased to function, was extraordinary.

Apple bought it, and like several Chinese billionaires, it has disappeared.  I have heard that bits and pieces of its remains are buried within Apple Weather, but the following research has convinced me to try some of the other options before I excavate within the Apple Weather app.

Weather Bug

This app provides local information like weather warnings, pollen count, and road conditions.  It has hourly forecast reports.  It is great for the everyday user and is considered a good alternative to Dark Sky if you need hyperlocal weather updates.

Weather Underground uses 30,000 local networks, both personal and amateur, for its weather data.  It also uses crowd reporting for flooding, power outages, and road conditions. It draws from 250,000 Weather Underground stations in the U.S.  The free version has ads, but if you upgrade to Premium, you will have no ads and you will get a 15-day forecast.  A premium subscription has additional features like personalizing and grouping the elements of weather you care about most – like wind and rain for a cyclist. A premium subscription costs $19.99 per year or $3.99 a month.

Geometric Weather is like Dark Sky in that it is straightforward, simple, and minimalist.  It displays the current temperature and air quality and gives you 15 days of weather forecasts and hourly forecasts for the next 24 hours.   It does not have a radar map like Dark Sky.  Other than that, Geometric Weather is highly recommended as a replacement for Dark Sky.

Ventusky is a strong visual weather app.  It has 3D weather maps and provides users with forecast information and meteorological data. The free version does not have ads, but the $4.00 a year subscription gives users a fuller experience.

Carrot Weather has been described as “cheeky” and “hilariously twisted”. However, it gets a 4.7 out of 5-star rating and great reviews.  It gives users weather maps, multiple forecast modes, and notifies users of precipitation and severe weather.  It sources its weather data from the same data that Dark Sky used, so its local forecasts are usually reliable. It allows you to access multiple sources of weather data including AccuWeather and ClimaCell. Its maps are beautiful. It is free, but certain features require a subscription which starts at $14.99 up to $29.99 a year. They are aggressive about wanting you to upgrade to Premium, but so far, I’m ignoring it.

Flowx is an Android-only weather app, the iOS version is in the works.  It has a reputation for high local forecast accuracy.  It has over 20 forecast models for up to seven-day weather projections.  If you opt for the paid version of the app, you could customize weather maps and receive up to 16-day forecasts.

Clime: Weather Radar Live is a NOAA radar weather tracker.  It uses real-time radar images, rain, and temperature forecasts.  It is for Android only and has ads.

(Not Boring) Weather is determined to make the weather fun.  You can customize where your weather data comes from (Accu Weather, OpenWeather and more).

This weather app has one simple screen with attractive icons, interface elements, and an at-a-glance information layout that is easy to understand.  You get a quick overview and can run for cover if necessary, or dig deeper into weather forecasts, impending doom, and more.
